What Does SEER and SEER2 Mean?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings are the ratio that identifies the cooling output of the cooling system over the cooling season and divided by the total watt-hours consumed to cool the home. SEER ratings have been updated to SEER2 as a response to the more accurate testing methods now available.

Under the new rating systems, units are rated from SEER2 13.4 to SEER2 18. This new scale provides a more accurate gauge of the unit’s energy efficiency and the anticipated influence it will have on your annual energy consumption.

2024 Minimum SEER Rating

There have been a number of HVAC regulatory changes that have gone into effect this year. Going forward, it’s important to adhere to these to ensure your home’s systems comply with these standards.

In addition to further reduction of hydrofluorocarbons within cooling systems, one of the most important change is the introduction of the SEER 2 ratings. These new ratings replace the previous SEER ratings, but you may notice both when purchasing a new system as the SEER 2 ratings are phased in.

For 2024, ductless mini-split systems with a certified cooling capacity less than 45,000 BTU, and single-package air conditioners must have a minimum SEER2 rating of 13.4. Also, while these are the minimum requirements, it’s important to note that to qualify for federal tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act, the system must have a minimum SEER2 rating of 16.

What SEER Rating Does My Michigan Home Need?

Existing systems do not need to comply with the updated regulations. However, there are many benefits to upgrading to a system with a higher SEER rating. Going forward, all systems in the North region that including Michigan must comply with the updated standards. This means that all new ductless mini-split systems or central air conditioners must have a minimum SEER 14. This is an increase from the current SEER 13 requirement.

Benefits of a High SEER Rating

There are plenty of reasons to purchase a system with a higher SEER rating. These include:

  • Saves money: Units with a high SEER rating consume less energy to cool your home which means lower utility bills throughout the year.
  • Lower carbon footprint: Less energy consumption translates to a lower carbon footprint which means the system is better for the environment.
  • More efficient: A higher SEER rating means less energy is wasted to cool your home.
  • Enhanced comfort: Systems with a higher SEER rating will provide greater indoor comfort for your family.
  • Curb appeal: Homes with more energy-efficient heating and cooling systems are more appealing to prospective home buyers.
